Cash plus marketable securities totaled $113.0 million at quarter-end.

At March 31, 2024, total assets were $769.8 million and shareholders’ equity was $687.3 million. Management said existing cash and operating cash generation should cover working capital and capital expenditure needs for at least the next 12 months.

Business trends and material changes

  • U.S. revenue rose 3.8% to $101.5 million; Europe revenue fell 6.1% to $26.4 million. Foreign-exchange movements added $0.9 million to year-over-year revenue.
  • Revenue from the Protolabs Network increased to $23.9 million from $17.2 million. Unique customer contacts served declined 3.5% to 22,466; management attributed the contrast with revenue growth partly to a strategy focused on larger customer orders.
  • By product line, CNC Machining increased 3.8% to $49.9 million, Injection Molding increased 1.4% to $52.7 million, and 3D Printing increased 1.2% to $21.6 million. Sheet Metal declined 16.4% to $3.6 million.
  • Gross margin improved as cost of revenue fell 2.3% despite revenue growth. Management cited lower contract labor, headcount and overtime costs in digital factories, alongside resource alignment to order volumes and automation.
  • Operating expenses rose 1.2% to $50.6 million. Marketing and sales and R&D costs increased, while G&A expense declined; there were no Japan-closure expenses in Q1 2024.
  • The effective tax rate declined to 31.8% from 47.2%, primarily reflecting tax effects related to equity awards and fewer losses in jurisdictions where tax benefits are unavailable. Other income declined to $0.9 million, including $1.1 million of interest and other income partly offset by $0.2 million of foreign-exchange losses.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

The filing provides no specific revenue or earnings guidance. Management expects cost of revenue and operating expenses to increase over time, citing personnel needs and planned investment in technology, systems, marketing and product-line expansion. The company stated that foreign-exchange exposure may affect results and cash flows, does not hedge that exposure with forward contracts or currency borrowings, and said a hypothetical 10% adverse exchange-rate change could materially affect results of operations, though it generally would not materially affect financial position.

Management reported no material changes to the risk factors in the 2023 Form 10-K and no litigation expected to have a material adverse effect. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective, with no material changes to internal control over financial reporting. No material accounting-policy changes were reported.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether improved gross margin and operating income persist, particularly if order volumes or factory utilization change.
  • Whether U.S. growth and Protolabs Network expansion can offset continued weakness in Europe and Sheet Metal revenue.
  • How customer-contact declines, larger-order strategy and network growth affect demand, customer concentration and margins.
  • Cash generation after capital spending and continued buybacks: 435,861 shares were repurchased for $16.0 million in Q1, with approximately $72.4 million remaining under the authorization.
  • Exposure to foreign-currency movements and changes in the effective tax rate.
