Strategy (MSTR), formerly known as MicroStrategy, is once again at the center of the cryptocurrency market’s explosive rebound as a historic Bitcoin (BTCUSD) short squeeze sends crypto-linked stocks sharply higher. On Aug. 20, a record $2.7 billion in bearish crypto positions were liquidated within 24 hours, with more than $1 billion in Bitcoin shorts closed in roughly one hour. The forced buying helped Bitcoin break above $71,000 and triggered a powerful rally across crypto equities, with Strategy shares jumping as much as 7.8% on Aug. 20 and 6.1% on Aug. 21.
The move has since grown far beyond a one-day squeeze. Bitcoin surged more than 25% over the past week and subsequently pushed above $80,000 on Aug. 25, supported by a weaker U.S. dollar, increased Treasury bond buybacks, and renewed optimism around U.S. crypto regulation. For Strategy, the rebound is particularly significant because of its massive Bitcoin holding, giving its stock substantial sensitivity to movements in the cryptocurrency.

However, can the rally continue after the short sellers have been forced out? The next phase may depend on sustained Bitcoin momentum, institutional demand, and Strategy’s ability to manage its capital structure.
About Strategy Stock
Strategy is a business intelligence software company that has transformed itself into a Bitcoin-focused treasury company. Headquartered in Tysons Corner, Virginia, Strategy develops enterprise analytics software while using Bitcoin as its primary treasury reserve asset. The company has a market cap of $47.1 billion. Strategy has built one of the largest corporate Bitcoin holdings globally, with its business model increasingly centered on acquiring and holding Bitcoin through equity and preferred stock offerings.
MSTR has fallen 63% over the past 52 weeks and was down 16.5% year-to-date (YTD). The stock had traded as high as $365.21 during the 52-week period, compared with the last closing of $126.87, highlighting the magnitude of the correction.
The picture, however, has changed dramatically in the short term. MSTR gained 37.13% over the five days. It also advanced 38.4% over the past month, showing that buying momentum has accelerated considerably as Bitcoin climbed over $80,000.
The recent surge reflects MSTR’s unusually high sensitivity to Bitcoin prices. Strategy is a leading corporate holder of Bitcoin, so a sharp recovery in the cryptocurrency can quickly translate into renewed demand for the stock. The latest rally has also coincided with a broader rebound in crypto-related equities as Bitcoin posted one of its strongest weekly advances.
Now it remains to be seen whether this is merely a powerful relief rally after a prolonged sell-off or the beginning of a more durable recovery.
The stock currently trades at a premium compared to industry peers at 96.01 times sales.
Mixed Quarterly Performance
Strategy reported its second-quarter 2026 financial results on July 30. Strategy’s total revenue increased 6.9% year-over-year (YOY) to $122.4 million. The increase was driven primarily by the company’s transition toward cloud-based subscription services. Subscription revenue jumped 54% to $62.9 million, while product-license revenue declined 48.9% to $3.7 million. Product-support revenue fell 22.7% to $40.2 million, while other services revenue increased 8.3% to $15.6 million.
Gross profit rose 3.7% to $81.6 million, but the gross margin narrowed to 66.6% from 68.8%.
The major swing factor was Bitcoin. Strategy recorded an $8.3 billion unrealized loss on digital assets, compared with a $14.1 billion unrealized gain in Q2 2025. As a result, the company swung to an operating loss of $8.3 billion, versus operating income of $14 billion a year earlier.

Meanwhile, the consensus loss per share estimate of $23.76 for fiscal 2026 reflects a deterioration of 56%, while the EPS estimate of $17.86 for fiscal 2027 indicates a 175.2% improvement YOY.
What Do Analysts Expect for Strategy Stock?
On Aug. 3, B. Riley Securities maintained its “Buy” rating on Strategy while lowering its price target to $155 from $215. The move represented a more cautious valuation outlook but did not change the firm’s bullish investment stance on Strategy.
Plus, on July 31, Benchmark analyst Mark Palmer maintained a “Buy” rating on Strategy while cutting his price target to $435 from $570. Despite the lower target, Palmer remained bullish on Strategy because he continues to view the company primarily as a leveraged Bitcoin proxy rather than a conventional enterprise-software company.
