INTC Stock Alert: What to Know as JPMorgan Upgrades Intel

Intel (INTC) stock is rebounding on Oct. 19 after JPMorgan upgraded the semiconductor giant, citing improving execution and stronger artificial intelligence (AI) demand. Analyst Harlan Sur lifted his rating on INTC to “Neutral” but left his $85 price target unchanged.

Intel shares, however, have been a lucrative investment in 2026, already trading at more than 2x their price at the start of this year.

What Made JPMorgan Upgrade Intel Stock Today

Sur’s upgraded outlook rests partly on an AI opportunity that extends beyond graphics processors. The JPM analyst expects increasingly CPU-intensive agentic AI workloads, alongside constrained supplies of leading-edge silicon, to support further earnings upgrades through 2027.

That matters for INTC shares because their recovery requires demand for the computing products the company already sells, alongside progress in its longer-term manufacturing ambitions.

The bank's 2028 earnings forecast for Intel stands about 15% above the consensus, suggesting it sees room for Wall Street’s expectations to rise.

JPMorgan’s argument offers investors potential counterweight to concerns about AI infrastructure spending: even as investment budgets remain under scrutiny, shifting artificial intelligence workloads could sustain demand for computing capacity.

Some Caution Is Still Warranted in Playing INTC Shares

JPM also credits CEO Lip-Bu Tan with progress across Intel’s client and data-center businesses, manufacturing yields, process technology, and advanced packaging. Those improvements strengthen confidence that INTC can translate demand into better financials.

Meanwhile, Intel shares’ retreat from their June high makes the investment proposition much more balanced. That said, Sur’s “Neutral” rating still warrants caution: INTC trades at about 92x forward earnings, which makes it expensive to own by any stretch of the imagination.

Capital needs remain another constraint, with 2027 free cash flow under pressure. All in all, JPM believes dilution risk is increasingly baked in, but its upgrade represents growing confidence in a multiyear recovery.

Wall Street’s View on Intel

Other Wall Street firms are much more bullish on INTC stock than JPMorgan, though.

The consensus rating on Intel sits at “Moderate Buy,” with the mean price target of about $116 indicating potential upside of more than 25% from here.
