GLOBALFOUNDRIES Inc. GFS is expanding its manufacturing capabilities through a new multi-year agreement with Marvell Technology, Inc. MRVL to increase production capacity for its silicon germanium (SiGe) technology. The collaboration is expected to support growing demand for high-speed optical connectivity, driven by artificial intelligence (AI) and cloud data center infrastructure.
Per the agreement, GlobalFoundries will increase SiGe production capacity at its Burlington, VT, facility to support Marvell’s growing requirements. The added capacity will support next-generation pluggable optical transceivers, Near-Packaged Optics and Co-packaged Optics. The technology provides the high-frequency performance, signal integrity and power efficiency required for optical networking applications.
The company’s existing solutions support 200G-per-lane optical connectivity, while its development roadmap targets higher-speed generations as bandwidth requirements continue to rise. With more than a decade of experience in advanced SiGe manufacturing, GlobalFoundries is combining the technology with silicon photonics and modern packaging to develop new optical architectures for increasingly demanding AI and cloud networks.
Rising investment in AI and cloud infrastructure is driving demand for high-performance optical networking solutions, creating growth opportunities for GlobalFoundries as the market continues to expand.
How Are Competitors Faring?
GlobalFoundries faces stiff competition from United Microelectronics UMC and Taiwan Semiconductor TSM. UMC is advancing its semiconductor capabilities to address growing demand from AI and data-center applications. The company has begun mass production of photonic IC wafers and is developing a 12-inch silicon photonics platform aimed at high-speed optical connectivity. UMC is advancing its 14nm embedded high-voltage FinFET technology for display driver ICs, supporting demand for more power-efficient and compact chips.
TSMC is advancing in chip manufacturing and packaging capacity to meet growing demand from AI and high-performance computing. The company introduced its A13 process technology to improve chip performance, power efficiency and size for AI, HPC and mobile products. TSMC is strengthening its CoWoS packaging and silicon photonics capabilities to help AI data centers move data faster.
