Waters Launches AI Link to Advance AI-Enabled LC-MS Workflows

Waters Corporation WAT recently launched Waters AI Link, a software capability that brings Anthropic's Model Context Protocol to its waters_connect informatics platform. The company also joined Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard (MHS) research program, extending its push into AI-enabled laboratory workflows.

The initiative is designed to connect AI models and agents with Waters' liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) instruments, data and automation, while supporting continuity from research through development and regulated quality-control environments.

WAT Is Advancing AI-Enabled LC-MS Workflows

Waters AI Link allows customers to connect waters_connect Software with Claude and other large language models and AI agents through a natural-language interface. The system can pair AI-driven workflows with Waters' data handling, instrument control and connected devices such as sample-preparation systems.

This allows AI agents to help create analytical methods, initiate data acquisition, process results and coordinate connected laboratory devices without requiring extensive custom software integration. By reducing manual intervention, this approach supports AI-augmented research workflows as well as automated lab-in-the-loop cycles in which physical testing of AI-generated hypotheses feeds new measurement data back to the model.

Advancing Automation Through Anthropic's MHS

Waters' participation in Anthropic's Model Hardware Standard research program complements AI Link by addressing the integration of AI agents with physical laboratory equipment. Instrument integration often requires weeks or months of custom engineering because devices from different manufacturers may use incompatible interfaces. MHS is designed to standardize communication between AI agents and laboratory hardware, potentially reducing integration time to hours or minutes.

The technology could allow AI agents to operate instruments, adjust experimental parameters as results arrive, respond to certain equipment errors and run experiments beyond normal working hours. For Waters, easier instrument integration could make its systems more attractive to customers seeking to automate research without undertaking extensive software development.

Extending AI Workflows From Research to Regulated Release

A key differentiator in Waters' strategy is its ability to connect research workflows with downstream development and regulated quality-control processes. The company's waters_connect Software supports instrument control, data acquisition and scientific workflows for LC-MS in research and development laboratories. As a molecule progresses, those workflows can move into Empower Software, which Waters describes as a compliant system of record for regulated settings.

This continuity is central to the company's strategy as AI-enhanced workflows can support method development, characterization and testing with less manual intervention and potentially compress development timelines from weeks to days. AI Link is available in early access, with general availability planned for November 2026 for waters_connect Software customers.

Strategic Implications

The launch strengthens Waters’ position at the intersection of analytical instrumentation, laboratory informatics and AI-driven automation. Its ability to connect research workflows with development and regulated quality control could be useful for pharmaceutical and biopharmaceutical customers seeking a continuous data and compliance framework.

The commercial opportunity extends to hardware and consumables as well. Waters said AI-generated hypotheses can increase the number of physical samples requiring separation and measurement, creating additional demand for instruments and columns.

The pace of commercialization will depend on customer adoption, integration reliability, regulatory requirements and the measurable productivity gains delivered by AI-enabled workflows. While the financial contribution remains uncertain, the launch positions Waters to pursue additional instrument and consumables demand while expanding the role of software in its analytical ecosystem.

Peers in Analytical Instruments and Lab Automation

The analytical instruments market includes several established companies like Thermo Fisher Scientific TMO, Agilent Technologies A and Danaher DHR, offering chromatography, mass spectrometry and laboratory software solutions.

Thermo Fisher Scientific competes in analytical instruments through its chromatography, mass spectrometry and laboratory informatics portfolio. TMO’s flagship Orbitrap technology provides industry-leading High-Resolution, Accurate-Mass (HRAM) capabilities for discovery proteomics, while their TSQ Triple Quadrupoles handle high-throughput, targeted trace quantitation. Thermo Fisher Scientific’s Chromeleon chromatography data system, TraceFinder and Ardia Platform integrate instrument control, data processing and compliance capabilities, helping laboratories manage complex analytical workflows.

Agilent Technologies competes through its liquid chromatography, gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and laboratory software offerings. Its 1290 Infinity III LC system, 6495D triple quadrupole mass spectrometer and OpenLab informatics solutions support pharmaceutical research, quality control and regulated testing. In May 2026, Agilent Technologies introduced OpenLab Sync, a laboratory execution system that digitizes bench procedures and improves traceability. In June 2026, it partnered with Sound Analytics to integrate LC-MS instruments with LeadScape software, targeting more efficient drug metabolism and pharmacokinetics workflows.

Danaher participates in the LC-MS market through its subsidiary SCIEX, which specializes in mass spectrometry and capillary electrophoresis. In June 2026, SCIEX launched its fifth-generation novus V55 triple quadrupole mass spectrometer with SCIEX OS 5.0 software, featuring AI tools, faster sample throughput and improved laboratory efficiency. In July 2026, SCIEX introduced the ExionLC MD system and updated SCIEX OS software to streamline clinical laboratory workflows through automation, exception management and integrated reporting. Danaher continues to strengthen its presence in the LC-MS market through SCIEX's LC-MS/MS systems, which support sensitive, precise molecular analysis.
