Truist Financial Explores AFCO Credit Sale to Sharpen Strategic Focus

According to a Bloomberg report, which was published on Yahoo Finance, Truist Financial Corporation TFC is exploring the potential sale of AFCO Credit Corp., its insurance premium financing business, as part of its broader efforts to streamline operations and focus on core banking activities. AFCO has approximately $6–$7 billion in assets, and Truist is reportedly working with financial advisers to gauge buyer interest. The bank is considering either an outright sale of the business or a disposal of its assets, although discussions remain early-stage and a transaction is not guaranteed.

Why is TFC Considering an AFCO Credit Sale?

The potential divestiture aligns with CEO Mike Lyons’ strategy to exit non-core lending businesses and redirect resources toward the bank’s core franchise. AFCO provides insurance premium financing, helping businesses such as commercial trucking fleets and construction companies pay their insurance premiums upfront. Its specialized lending operations could attract interest from private credit investors, with the business reportedly expected to command a premium to its underlying assets. However, the potential sale price and transaction structure remain undetermined.

The proposed sale follows other portfolio-repositioning initiatives. In September 2026, Truist Financial announced its exit from near-prime auto lending through the sale of approximately $5.5 billion in loans originated by Regional Acceptance Corporation. The transaction generated about $5.2 billion in net proceeds, which the bank used to repay wholesale borrowings. It also repositioned its available-for-sale securities portfolio to improve asset yields. These actions are intended to reduce credit exposure, improve funding efficiency and support profitability.

Truist Financial subsequently signed an agreement on Oct. 14, 2026, to sell $7.7 billion in unsecured consumer loans, representing substantially all the assets of its LightStream lending platform, to Carlyle Group. The transaction is expected to generate approximately $7.2 billion in net proceeds, which Truist Financial plans to use to repay wholesale borrowings. The bank continues to evaluate its loan portfolios as part of its broader strategic review.

Can Portfolio Optimization Support TFC’s Profitability?

Truist Financial’s ongoing portfolio rationalization could help improve its funding profile, reduce exposure to selected lending segments and allow management to concentrate on businesses with more attractive risk-adjusted returns. The AFCO review would extend this strategy beyond auto and unsecured consumer lending into specialty commercial finance.

The potential divestiture also aligns with Truist Financial’s efforts to strengthen its core banking franchise through investments in digital capabilities, commercial banking and deposit gathering. However, the financial impact of an AFCO sale will depend on the transaction terms, the proceeds generated and how effectively management redeploys the released capital and resources.

While the potential sale represents another step toward a more focused business model, investors should note that discussions remain preliminary. Until Truist Financial announces a definitive agreement, the timing, valuation and outcome of the proposed divestiture remain uncertain.

Our Take on TFC

Truist Financial’s potential AFCO Credit sale underscores management’s continued efforts to streamline operations, optimize its balance sheet and focus on core banking businesses. Following its planned exit from near-prime auto lending and the LightStream consumer loan sale agreement, another divestiture could further improve funding efficiency and reduce exposure to specialized lending segments. However, the ultimate benefits will depend on the sale price, transaction structure and redeployment of proceeds. While portfolio optimization could support long-term profitability, execution risks and continued credit-cost pressures remain key concerns.

Over the past year, shares of TFC have rallied 24.4% compared with the industry’s 9.6% growth.
