STX Falls 24.1% in the Past Month as Risks Test AI Storage Momentum

Seagate Technology Holdings plc STX has fallen 24.1% in the past month even as its operating results continue to strengthen. The disconnect puts greater weight on execution and valuation as investors assess whether the pullback improves the risk-reward profile.

Fiscal first-quarter 2027 results showed sharply higher earnings, margins and data-center revenues. Still, the shares remain exposed to HAMR qualification timing, customer concentration and a valuation premium that leaves less room for operational setbacks.

Why STX’s Past-Month Slide Matters

Seagate’s fiscal first-quarter revenues rose 61% year over year to $4.23 billion, while non-GAAP earnings increased to $7.68 per share from $2.61 a year earlier. Non-GAAP gross margin expanded to 57.8% from 40.1%, and operating margin reached 50.7%.

That operating momentum contrasts with the recent share decline. The gap matters because the stock’s next move may depend less on whether demand is strong today and more on whether Seagate can sustain pricing, product transitions and margin expansion as expectations remain elevated.

Seagate’s Growth Engine Is Still Accelerating

Data Center revenues increased 63% year over year to $3.45 billion and represented 81% of total revenues. Nearline shipments reached 198 exabytes, up 24%, while cloud revenues increased for a 12th consecutive quarter and enterprise OEM revenues advanced for a sixth straight quarter.

The demand backdrop also extends beyond Seagate. Western Digital Corporation WDC describes HDDs as critical infrastructure for cloud data centers and the AI-driven digital economy, underscoring continued relevance for high-capacity disk storage. Micron Technology, Inc. MU is expanding high-capacity data-center SSDs, illustrating that storage demand is broad but competition across architectures remains active.

HAMR Execution Could Define STX’s Rebound

Seagate expects HAMR to represent roughly half of its nearline exabyte shipment run rate exiting calendar 2026, with Mozaic 4 accounting for about half of HAMR shipments. Mozaic 4 supports capacities of up to 44 terabytes and is ramping with two leading cloud service providers.

Execution remains the key variable. Nearline shipments increased only 1% sequentially in the September quarter as products were staged ahead of customer qualifications. Additional cloud and enterprise qualifications are expected in the coming months, making timing, yields and manufacturing stability important to the next phase of capacity growth.

Seagate’s Valuation Leaves Less Room for Error

STX trades at 13.97X forward 12-month earnings, compared with 9.41X for the Zacks sub-industry. That premium can be supported by earnings growth, pricing and margin expansion, but it also increases sensitivity to any slowdown in cloud spending or product execution.

Other risks remain visible. Data Center accounted for 81% of quarterly revenues, leaving Seagate exposed to large customer spending cycles. Higher external component costs were absorbed by pricing and mix in the latest quarter, but persistent cost pressure or weaker pricing could narrow the margin cushion.

STX’s Ratings Favor Growth and Momentum

The pullback has not erased Seagate’s operating momentum, but valuation and execution risks still argue against treating the decline as an automatic entry point. The stock currently carries a Zacks Rank #2 (Buy), which indicates a favorable near-term earnings-estimate backdrop without guaranteeing share-price gains. STX also has a Growth Score of A and Momentum Score of A, while its while its VGM Score is B. Those readings support favorable growth and price-trend characteristics. The Value Score of F, however, highlights weak value characteristics, reinforcing the need to balance operating strength against the stock’s premium valuation.
