Can NUE's Strong Balance Sheet Power Bigger Shareholder Returns Ahead?

Nucor Corporation NUE is maximizing shareholder returns by leveraging its strong balance sheet and cash flow. Nucor has returned roughly $1.36 billion through share buybacks and dividends in the first nine months of 2026. It returned $629 million to its shareholders in the third quarter. Notably, NUE returned around $1.2 billion to its shareholders last year through dividends and share repurchases, representing nearly 70% of net earnings.

It ended third-quarter 2026 with strong liquidity of roughly $4.3 billion, including cash and cash equivalents of around $3.5 billion. It also generated cash from operations of roughly $4.5 billion in the first nine months of 2026.

In December 2025, the company raised its quarterly dividend to 56 cents per share from 55 cents. Nucor has increased its regular dividend for 53 straight years since it started paying dividends in 1973. It remains committed to its policy of returning at least 40% of earnings to its shareholders.

Nucor is executing a well-defined capital allocation policy using its substantial cash generation to drive shareholder value, fund its growth projects and reduce debt. With a solid balance sheet underpinned by a strong credit profile, NUE remains well-placed to continue this shareholder-focused strategy.

Among its peers, Steel Dynamics, Inc. STLD remains committed to maximizing its shareholder returns. Steel Dynamics paid $76.1 million in dividends and repurchased $275.6 million of common stock during the third quarter. STLD’s liquidity totaled approximately $2.37 billion at the end of the third quarter.

Commercial Metals Company CMC is also pursuing a disciplined capital allocation strategy, capitalizing on its solid balance sheet and cash flow profile. Commercial Metals repurchased shares worth $26.7 million during the fiscal fourth quarter and kept its quarterly dividend at 20 cents per share. CMC had available liquidity of more than $2 billion at the end of fiscal 2026.
