Frequently asked questions about Expert Advisors

What is an Expert Advisor?

An Expert Advisor, or EA, is a trading robot for MetaTrader 5. It can analyze market data and, when automated trading is enabled, open, modify and close trades according to the strategy programmed by its developer.

How does an Expert Advisor decide when to trade?

An Expert Advisor follows its programmed rules. Depending on the strategy, it may use prices, technical indicators, time, account information, open positions and other data available in MetaTrader 5. When the required conditions are met, the EA performs the action specified by its algorithm.

Can I test an Expert Advisor before buying it?

Yes. Download the demo version and run it in the MetaTrader 5 Strategy Tester. Choose the symbol, timeframe, historical period and testing settings, then review the completed trades, profit, losses and drawdown. A demo EA from the Store cannot be launched on an online chart.

How do I choose an Expert Advisor?

First check compatibility with your symbols, timeframes and account mode. Then study the trading logic, position-sizing rules, risk settings, testing conditions, documentation and update history. Run your own tests over several market periods and use realistic spread, commission and execution-delay settings. One attractive report is not enough to judge a strategy.

Why can live results differ from a backtest?

A backtest recreates trading on historical data using selected assumptions. Live trading uses actual spreads, commissions, swaps, execution modes, broker settings and available market prices. These conditions change over time. The Strategy Tester helps examine an algorithm, but it cannot reproduce every situation the robot will face in live trading.

Can I run several Expert Advisors at the same time?

Yes. Attach each Expert Advisor to a separate chart. Only one EA can run on a single chart, but you can open several charts and use a different robot on each one. Before doing this, make sure the robots do not manage the same positions or create excessive combined risk.

Does MetaTrader 5 need to stay open while the Expert Advisor is running?

Yes, if the EA runs locally on your computer. When MetaTrader 5 is closed or disconnected, the robot stops receiving market events and cannot continue trading. For round-the-clock operation, an Expert Advisor can be moved to MetaTrader virtual hosting.

How do I start an Expert Advisor after installation?

Open the Navigator and find the robot under “Expert Advisors” usually in the “Market” folder. Double-click it or drag it onto the required chart. Review the input parameters and enable automated trading both in the EA settings and in the platform if the robot needs to execute trades.
