Operating margin was approximately 29%, versus 23%. Continuing-operations net income was $1,971, up from $1,444; the prior-year quarter also included $430 of after-tax income from discontinued operations, related to the Omnitracs sale.
At quarter end, cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities totaled approximately $31.6 billion. Current assets were $22.8 billion and current liabilities $6.4 billion. The balance sheet does not show a separate debt balance; management said it expected to begin issuing debt in Q2 FY2015. No numerical debt guidance or borrowing amount was provided.
Material changes versus the prior comparable period
- QCT revenue increased to $5,242 from $4,616; segment earnings before tax (EBT) rose to $1,146 from $906. MSM integrated circuit shipments increased 27% to approximately 270 million, while lower average selling prices and product mix partly offset the volume benefit.
- QTL revenue declined to $1,816 from $1,900, and EBT fell to $1,579 from $1,670. Qualcomm cited lower revenue per reported unit and said results were affected by underreported units from certain licensees and sales of unlicensed products in China.
- Net cash from operations fell by $417, primarily reflecting working-capital movements, including a $303 inventory cash outflow. Financing cash outflow was $2,203, including $1,664 of share repurchases and $697 of dividends paid.
- Other expense was $69, compared with $472 a year earlier. The current quarter included a $69 goodwill impairment for a push-to-talk services business; the prior period included $444 of QMT impairment, $16 of QRS goodwill impairment and a $12 ParkerVision verdict charge.
- The effective tax rate was 14%, versus 18%. A retroactive research and development tax credit generated a $101 tax benefit related to fiscal 2014; management estimated a 17% annual effective rate for FY2015.
Outlook, management commentary and risks
- Management expects continued demand growth for 3G, 3G/4G and 4G products, with opportunities from emerging markets, China’s LTE rollout, the Internet of Things and automotive. The filing provides no numerical revenue or earnings forecast in the supplied text.
- Management expects QCT results to be adversely affected in the second half of FY2015 by premium-tier customer share shifts, the expected absence of Snapdragon 810 from a large customer’s upcoming flagship design cycle, and heightened competition in China.
- Qualcomm intends to return at least 75% of free cash flow to stockholders through repurchases and dividends over the foreseeable future. It repurchased $1.7 billion of shares during the quarter; approximately $3.6 billion remained authorized at December 28. The quarterly dividend announced was $0.42 per share.
- Management said cash, securities and expected operating cash flow should meet working and other capital needs for at least 12 months. It expects to use U.S.-based cash resources and may supplement them with debt issuance. Approximately $27.5 billion of cash and securities was held by foreign entities and was generally treated as indefinitely reinvested.
- The proposed CSR acquisition was valued at approximately $2.4 billion and was expected to close by the end of summer 2015, subject to remaining conditions and regulatory approvals. Qualcomm had set aside approximately $3.8 billion of securities and $38 million of cash equivalents for the transaction.
- Material legal and regulatory matters include China’s NDRC antitrust investigation, which Qualcomm said involved a probable loss but for which it could not estimate a loss range; European Commission and FTC investigations into business practices and licensing; and SEC/DOJ investigations concerning FCPA compliance. Qualcomm had not accrued contingent losses for these matters. The filing warns that adverse outcomes could materially affect results, financial condition or cash flows.
- Other notable disputes include Nvidia patent claims before the ITC and in court, ParkerVision patent litigation and ongoing Japanese and Korean competition matters. The company said it would vigorously defend itself and could not predict outcomes of the investigations and proceedings.
- Additional risks include competition and pricing pressure, dependence on a limited number of major customers and licensees, supply concentration, possible royalty underreporting or delayed licensing in China, and uncertainty in global device demand and foreign exchange rates.
Important facts for investors to verify
