Material changes versus comparable periods

  • Nine-month net income increased 4.4%, supported by higher net interest income, lower noninterest expense, and lower income tax expense. Q3 net income was nearly flat.
  • Net interest margin contracted as earning-asset yields fell faster than funding costs; management cited lower loan and investment yields in the prevailing rate environment.
  • Loan growth was led by several lending portfolios, while deposit growth supported funding and short-term borrowings declined from year-end.
  • Nonperforming assets improved from year-end and from September 2013, mainly due to lower nonaccrual loans and sales of other real estate. However, 30-day-plus delinquencies increased year over year, primarily in aircraft financing; nonperforming TDRs also rose to $17.00 million from $11.82 million at year-end.
  • Accumulated other comprehensive income was $8.65 million, compared with $6.58 million at year-end, reflecting changes in unrealized securities gains and losses. No other-than-temporary impairment write-downs were reported.

Outlook, risks, contingencies, and unusual items

  • The filing provides no specific earnings or revenue guidance. Management said current funding sources were adequate to meet cash-flow needs; the balance sheet had $342.60 million more assets than liabilities scheduled to reprice within one year.
  • Management cautioned that results may be affected by interest rates, loan prepayment assumptions, economic conditions, industry and geographic credit concentrations, competition, regulation, and changes in law or accounting standards. It identified concentrations in Northern Indiana and Southwestern Lower Michigan and specialty-finance collateral and foreign-market exposures.
  • Foreign loans and leases, all in aircraft financing, totaled $213.98 million, including $108.59 million to Brazil and $83.31 million to Mexico. The filing reported no significant concentration in other countries.
  • A $1.18 million one-time tax benefit from settlements with taxing authorities and expiration of a statute of limitations contributed to lower 2014 effective tax rates. The nine-month effective tax rate was 33.63%, versus 36.21% in 2013.
  • Potential liquidity exposure from collateral requirements on public-fund deposits was estimated at approximately $554 million if requirements change. Standby letters of credit totaled $21.57 million. Management did not expect pending legal proceedings to materially adversely affect financial position or results.
  • Management reported no material change in market risks or risk factors since year-end. Disclosure controls were deemed effective, with no material change in internal control over financial reporting during the quarter.

  • Capital, liquidity, and funding capacity under adverse deposit, market-rate, or collateral-pledging conditions.
  • Execution and remaining authorization under the July 2014 share-repurchase plan, which authorized purchases of up to 2 million shares.
