Services revenue rose 12.9% to $201.9 million, while product revenue fell 4.8% to $835.8 million. Product gross margin improved to 44.2% from 43.0%; services gross margin rose to 48.4% from 43.9%. The overall margin improvement reflected lower component costs and stronger services margins, partly offset by lower-margin product mix.

Cash, cash equivalents and investments totaled $1.475 billion at quarter-end, up $225.6 million from October 28, 2023. Cash and cash equivalents were $1.265 billion. Debt carrying value was approximately $1.555 billion, including the term loan and senior notes; the $300 million revolving facility had no borrowings, with $70.6 million of letters of credit issued. The term loan’s reported rate was 7.34% at quarter-end; interest-rate swaps hedge portions of floating-rate exposure.

Working capital generated $130.0 million of operating cash, principally from collections and inventory consumption. Net inventories were $984.9 million, down from $1.051 billion. The company repurchased $32.0 million of shares during the quarter.

Material changes versus prior year

  • Networking Platforms revenue declined 5.6% to $807.2 million, driven mainly by lower Optical Networking and Routing and Switching sales. Platform Software and Services grew 22.2% to $89.7 million; Global Services grew 12.7% to $126.8 million; Blue Planet revenue declined 9.5% to $13.9 million.
  • Geographically, Americas revenue declined 6.1% and APAC declined 19.1%; EMEA increased 35.7%.
  • Net income fell despite higher gross profit, primarily reflecting a $21.3 million decrease in interest and other income and a $7.9 million increase in interest expense. The prior-year quarter included a $26.5 million gain from remeasurement of Ciena’s previously held Tibit investment.
  • Operating cash flow swung from cash use to cash generation, aided by favorable working-capital movements, including receivables and inventory.

Outlook, commentary, risks and unusual items

  • Management says service-provider orders remained below revenue through Q1 and the return to more typical ordering is taking longer than expected. North American providers are working through elevated inventories and deployment delays; macroeconomic and market-specific caution is affecting some international markets. Ciena expects these dynamics to persist for the next few quarters.
  • Backlog was $2.2 billion at quarter-end, down from $4.2 billion at FY2022 year-end; management expects it to continue declining during FY2024 as supply improves and customers place fewer advance orders. Management emphasizes that backlog timing is not a reliable predictor of quarterly revenue and that growth increasingly depends on new orders, including book-to-revenue orders.
  • Remaining performance obligations were $1.7 billion, with approximately 83% expected to be recognized within 12 months. This is a separate measure from reported backlog.
  • Management identifies long-term demand drivers including cloud adoption, 5G, high-definition video, generative AI, and network resilience and automation. The filing provides no quantified revenue or earnings guidance.
  • Inventory risk remains relevant: Ciena recorded a $10.4 million excess-and-obsolescence provision, primarily due to reduced forecast demand for certain Networking Platforms products. Finished goods rose as deliveries on some advance orders were rescheduled.
  • Outstanding purchase-order commitments to suppliers and contract manufacturers were $1.9 billion; only a portion is firm, non-cancelable and unconditional. Risks include order shortfalls, customer delivery deferrals, supply-chain and geopolitical disruption, foreign exchange, interest rates, and customer concentration. Two cloud providers together represented $275.1 million of revenue in the quarter.
  • Restructuring charges were $5.0 million, related to workforce reductions, facilities and process changes. Ciena says ordinary-course litigation and tax matters are not expected to have a material effect.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether service-provider orders recover and book-to-revenue orders offset continued backlog decline and delivery rescheduling.
  • Whether gross-margin gains persist as product mix, inventory provisions and services delivery costs change.
  • Whether inventory levels and the $1.9 billion of purchase commitments remain aligned with actual demand.
  • How floating-rate debt costs, hedging and cash generation affect earnings and liquidity.
  • Progress against the $1.7 billion of remaining performance obligations, and the pace of share repurchases versus other capital needs.
