Americas revenue increased 19.8%; EMEA declined 3.0% and APAC declined 6.3%. AT&T was the only customer representing at least 10% of quarterly revenue, at $110.9m.
Product gross margin fell to 44.0% from 47.2%, while services gross margin improved to 51.1% from 47.4%. Operating expenses rose 14.9% to $324.2m, led by higher R&D and selling and marketing costs. Interest and other income was $3.7m, versus a $1.1m loss; the current-period result included a $4.1m unrealized gain on an equity investment and foreign-exchange effects.
Liquidity, debt and capital allocation
Cash and cash equivalents were $1.119bn at quarter-end; short- and long-term investments totaled $549.0m, for combined cash and investments of $1.668bn, down $6.4m from October 30, 2021. Ciena reported $54.4m of cash used in operations, as working-capital cash use of $157.6m exceeded net income adjusted for non-cash charges of $103.2m. Inventory rose to $457.6m from $374.3m, principally as the company built raw-material supplies amid component shortages.
Debt carrying value was approximately $1.072bn, including the $2025 term loan and newly issued $400m of 4.00% senior notes due 2030. The notes generated approximately $395.5m in net proceeds for general corporate purposes. No ABL Credit Facility borrowings were outstanding; $84.4m of letters of credit were collateralized by the facility. The company spent $250m on an accelerated share repurchase during the quarter under a $1bn authorization; the remaining ASR shares were delivered February 15, 2022.
Management outlook, risks and notable items
- Management said supply-chain constraints, particularly semiconductor shortages, and related manufacturing disruptions adversely affected Q1 revenue. It expects supply challenges to persist at least through the remainder of FY2022, potentially longer, with pressure on revenue timing and amount, product costs and gross margin. Ciena also reported that the specific disruptions experienced in Q1 had begun to improve.
- Management described demand and order volumes as strong, particularly among larger existing customers, while noting that some orders may reflect customers accelerating purchases to secure supply. Remaining performance obligations were $2.4bn at January 29, 2022; approximately 89% was expected to be recognized within 12 months. These are backlog disclosures, not formal revenue guidance.
- The filing does not provide a specific full-year revenue or earnings forecast. Management stated that cash, investments, operating cash flow and other liquidity sources were expected to meet anticipated needs for the next 12 months and foreseeable future.
- Key risks include component availability and cost, contract-manufacturer disruptions, demand and inventory forecasting, COVID-19 effects, foreign-exchange and international operating risks, and cybersecurity. Inventory purchases and non-cancellable supplier commitments intended to secure supply increase the risk of excess or obsolete inventory.
- Ciena acquired AT&T’s Vyatta virtual routing and switching technology for approximately $56m in cash. The acquisition’s reported revenue and earnings contribution was immaterial in the quarter. The company recorded $3.4m of restructuring costs. Management said ordinary-course litigation and tax matters were not expected to have a material financial effect.
Important facts for investors to verify
- Whether supply constraints, production interruptions and higher component costs continue to affect revenue fulfillment and gross margins.
- Whether elevated inventory converts into shipments and revenue without material obsolescence or write-downs.
- How operating cash flow and working-capital requirements develop after the quarter’s cash use.
- Debt terms, interest costs and capital allocation, including any further repurchases under the remaining authorization.
- Whether reported order strength and the $2.4bn remaining performance obligations translate into revenue on the expected timeline.
