Reported net profit margin was approximately 9.3%, compared with approximately 6.0% in the prior-year quarter. Pretax margin was approximately 12.5%, compared with approximately 8.1%. Cost of sales declined 5.8%, primarily from lower volumes and moderating input costs, while selling, general and administrative expense increased 7.3% due principally to wage inflation and growth investments.

Performance Coatings sales were $2.614 billion, down 0.5%, while segment income increased 1.8% to $402 million. Industrial Coatings sales were $1.697 billion, down 3.1%, while segment income increased 3.8% to $249 million.

At March 31, 2024, cash and cash equivalents were $1.181 billion and short-term investments were $54 million. Current assets were $7.671 billion and current liabilities were $4.943 billion. Short-term debt and current maturities were $311 million, and long-term debt was $5.940 billion, for reported debt of approximately $6.251 billion excluding lease liabilities. PPG had a $2.3 billion undrawn revolving credit facility and no commercial paper outstanding. Its debt covenant ratio was 43%, below the 60% limit.

Material changes versus the prior comparable period

  • Sales declined $69 million, driven by a 2% volume decrease. Asia Pacific and Latin America sales increased, but U.S. and Canada and EMEA sales declined.
  • Reported earnings benefited significantly from the absence of the $190 million non-cash pension settlement charge recorded in Q1 2023.
  • Q1 2023 also included a $9 million insurance recovery; Q1 2024 included no comparable recovery.
  • Adjusted diluted EPS increased only modestly because lower volumes and higher operating expenses offset moderating raw-material costs and pricing benefits.
  • Operating cash flow turned negative, primarily because of unfavorable working-capital movements, including increases in receivables and inventories.
  • Capital expenditures more than doubled year over year. Management expects approximately $600 million of capital spending for full-year 2024.
  • PPG borrowed an additional €250 million under its term loan in January 2024. It also repurchased 1.1 million shares for approximately $149 million and paid $153 million in common-stock dividends.
  • The company announced strategic reviews of its U.S. and Canada architectural coatings business and its global silicas products business.

Guidance, outlook, commentary and risks

  • For Q2 2024, management expects aggregate organic sales in Performance Coatings to increase by a low-single-digit percentage year over year. Expected areas of strength include Mexico, aerospace, and protective and marine coatings.
  • Performance Coatings expects continued benefits from moderating input costs and targeted incremental price increases, but automotive refinish comparisons are expected to be difficult.
  • Industrial Coatings expects Q2 organic sales to be similar to Q2 2023. Global industrial production is expected to remain subdued, with improvement in Asia Pacific offset by sluggish Europe. Lower index-based pricing and the absence of European energy-related surcharge pricing are expected to pressure 2024 sales.
  • Restructuring savings were approximately $8 million in Q1, with at least $35 million expected for 2024. Cash outlays related to restructuring actions are expected to be approximately $80 million.
  • Management expects cash on hand, operating cash flow, capital-market access and credit facilities to fund operations, capital spending, acquisitions, dividends, debt service, pension contributions and share repurchases.
  • Key risks include weak global demand, lower industrial production, raw-material, energy, labor and logistics costs, pricing execution, foreign-exchange volatility, geopolitical and economic conditions, restructuring execution, acquisitions, environmental obligations, asbestos and other litigation, and regulatory developments.
  • Environmental reserves totaled $220 million at March 31, 2024. Management identified additional reasonably possible but unreserved environmental losses of approximately $100 million to $200 million.
  • Asbestos reserves were $48 million. Management believes current reserves and insurance are adequate, but litigation outcomes remain uncertain. A Clean Water Act civil-penalty trial related to the Cadogan Property was scheduled for June 3, 2024.

Most important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether volume trends improve as anticipated, particularly in architectural, automotive refinish and industrial coatings.
  • Whether pricing and moderating input costs offset lower volumes, wage inflation and other selling, general and administrative investments.
  • The conversion of earnings into cash, including normalization of receivables, inventory and operating working capital.
  • The effect of the strategic reviews on segment composition, revenue, margins, proceeds and future capital allocation.
  • Progress toward the stated $600 million 2024 capital-spending plan and at least $35 million of restructuring savings.
  • Debt maturities, interest-rate exposure, foreign-currency effects and compliance with the 60% leverage covenant.
  • Potential changes in environmental reserves, asbestos liabilities, litigation outcomes and unreserved environmental exposures.
  • The scope and timing of the additional $2.5 billion share-repurchase authorization approved on April 18, 2024, after the quarter ended.
