Q2 revenue increased 56% year over year, led by smart-glasses sales, particularly higher M400 unit sales. Product revenue was $4.43 million and engineering-services revenue was $0.27 million. H1 revenue grew 61%; management noted higher average discounts associated with larger-volume reseller sales.

Cash declined $23.98 million from December 31, 2022. At June 30, current assets were $68.32 million and current liabilities were $6.83 million, yielding working capital of $61.50 million, down from $75.96 million at year-end. The company reported no current or long-term debt obligations, apart from $3.50 million of current licensing-fee commitments. Operating lease liabilities totaled $0.63 million.

Changes versus prior comparable periods

  • Q2 gross margin rose to 21% from 9%; H1 gross margin rose to 21% from 13%. Higher sales and lower cost of sales as a percentage of revenue contributed to the improvement.
  • Q2 net loss narrowed to $9.04 million from $10.02 million; H1 net loss narrowed to $19.29 million from $20.53 million. H1 operating loss was essentially unchanged at $20.45 million versus $20.41 million.
  • Operating expenses included higher selling and marketing costs, while research and development and general and administrative costs declined. Depreciation and amortization rose substantially, mainly reflecting amortization of Atomistic technology licenses.
  • H1 investment income increased to $1.32 million from $0.12 million, primarily due to higher interest earned on excess cash; this helped reduce net loss but did not prevent operating cash outflow.

Outlook, risks and notable items

  • The filing provides no specific revenue, earnings, margin or cash-flow guidance. Management identifies the sufficiency of cash for at least the next 12 months as a forward-looking matter, rather than presenting a definitive forecast.
  • Management expects construction of the new facility to be completed by the end of September 2023. H1 spending included $2.77 million on manufacturing equipment and leasehold improvements, primarily for waveguide expansion.
  • The Atomistic micro-LED technology agreements carry a remaining $3.50 million cash funding commitment expected to be paid over the next six months. Upon specified deliverables and milestones, Vuzix also may owe $2.50 million and issue 1.75 million to 2.87 million shares over the next 6 to 18 months.
  • Customer concentration is significant: one customer accounted for 75% of Q2 product revenue. At June 30, two customers represented 58% and 23% of accounts receivable. Management also cites reliance on key customers, suppliers and manufacturing capacity; rapid technological change; competition; order timing; inventory and product-supply execution; and foreign-exchange exposure.
  • H1 operating cash use was $12.09 million and investing cash use was $11.44 million. The company reported $6.50 million of H1 stock-based compensation; some LTIP milestones currently not considered probable could result in up to a further $34.1 million of non-cash compensation expense if they become probable or are achieved.
  • Inventory obsolescence reserve increased to $1.90 million from $1.42 million at year-end. The company reported no material pending legal proceedings and no material changes to the risk factors in its 2022 Form 10-K. Disclosure controls were assessed as effective at June 30, 2023.

  • Inventory valuation, the obsolescence reserve and the potential scale and timing of LTIP stock-based compensation.
