Elon Musk’s SpaceX Now Controls 80% of the Race to Orbit

SpaceX carried roughly 1,950 tonnes into orbit so far in 2026, about 80% of the global total. Elon Musk called his company "an anomaly in the matrix."

Earlier, a Tesla investor shared 2026 launch counts and argued that only China's state-owned China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) keeps pace. Yet tracking tonnes instead of flights tilts the picture even further.

Why SpaceX Mass to Orbit Leaves Rivals Far Behind

The ooinsights tracker logs 2,396 tonnes sent to orbit across 236 successful launches this year. That total sits 4.7% below the same point in 2025.

Even combined, the next seven providers lifted less than a quarter of SpaceX's total.

Starship explains much of the gap. Three flights of the heavy rocket alone carried 120 tonnes each, the tracker shows.

Replying to the chart, Musk described SpaceX as "an anomaly in the matrix." The phrase borrows from the film The Matrix, where an anomaly is something the system cannot explain.

Will Mass to Space Matter More Than Tesla Cars?

The comment came minutes after Musk addressed Tesla's future. Another Tesla investor had urged critics to look past Roadster sales and picture a Tesla and SpaceX merger.

Musk pushed back. He said Optimus, Tesla's humanoid robot, and Cybercab, its driverless taxi, will make up most of Tesla's value.

Optimus and Cybercab will be the vast majority of Tesla’s value.

The only things that will scale to incredible size (K2 and beyond) economically are super intelligence, robots, solar power and mass to space.

And, of course, if you have the first two, the rest will follow.…

He then listed four things that can scale to "K2 and beyond." Superintelligence, robots, solar power, and mass to space made the cut.

K2 refers to a Type II civilization on the Kardashev scale, which captures the full energy of its star. Musk has previously argued that Earth's economy looks tiny next to a K2 economy.

Notably, SpaceX mass to orbit is the only item on that list already running at scale. Still, Musk called the flying Tesla Roadster "super cool" and said Tesla will build it anyway.

That leaves launch capacity at the center of his pitch for both companies. With Musk forecasting a $100 trillion SpaceX valuation, SpaceX mass to orbit has become the metric investors may watch closely.
