Netflix NFLX is testing whether its margin gains can withstand a steadily rising content bill. Third-quarter 2026 results showed operating margin expanding to 34.6% from 28.2% a year ago, even as additions to content assets climbed 10.9% year over year to $5.16 billion. Content amortization rose just 5.8% to $4.24 billion, while revenues grew 11.8% to $12.87 billion, lifting operating income 37% to $4.46 billion.
Spending is not flattening, however. Nine-month additions to content assets totaled $14.93 billion, up 24%, while amortization grew 9.5%. Netflix expects an annual cash content spend-to-amortization ratio of about 1.1x and reaffirmed its 2026 operating margin target of 31.5%, up from 29.5% in 2025. Third-quarter outperformance partly reflected expense timing, shifting some costs into the final quarter.
Netflix projects revenues of $13.4 billion, suggesting a 12% increase, and a 26% operating margin, including about 120 basis points of drag from headcount reductions. The holiday quarter carries its biggest live slate yet, with the NFL’s Thanksgiving Eve game, a Christmas Day doubleheader and the Tyson Fury vs. Anthony Joshua bout. Films include The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, Animals and animated titles Steps and Ray Gunn , while series include East of Eden, The Diplomat Season 4, Lupin: Part 4 and Emily in Paris ’ final season. Early 2027 brings Blue Eye Samurai Season 2 and Sakamoto Days Season 2 in January, along with the live reality series Will You Marry Me? on Netflix .
Mixed signals persist. Netflix cut its 2026 ad revenue outlook to about $2.7 billion from roughly $3 billion and trimmed free cash flow guidance to roughly $12 billion from $12.5 billion. Positively, licensing deals with Disney and TF1 and ad-tier launches in 15 new countries from March 2027 broaden engagement cost-effectively. Sustaining margins hinges on revenues keeping pace with content outlay.
Disney and Paramount Skydance Navigate Similar Trade-Offs
Disney DIS and Skydance Corporation SKYD are also balancing content outlays with streaming profitability. Disney’s direct-to-consumer business posted third-quarter fiscal 2026 operating income of $712 million, reflecting a 12.9% margin, and Disney remains on track for double-digit streaming margins in fiscal 2026. Disney plans about $24 billion in companywide content spending this fiscal year, up modestly. Paramount Skydance’s second-quarter 2026 direct-to-consumer revenues grew 9% to $2.5 billion, with Paramount+ reaching 81.6 million subscribers. However, Paramount Skydance expects a year-over-year decline in second-half streaming profit due to higher sports and original content amortization. Paramount Skydance guides 2026 adjusted EBITDA of $3.8-$3.9 billion.
