  • By segment, Life Sciences and Applied Markets revenue fell 14% to $754 million; Diagnostics and Genomics fell 9% to $417 million; Agilent CrossLab grew 4% to $402 million. CrossLab operating income rose 19% to $123 million, while the other two segments’ operating income declined.
  • For the six months, revenue was $3.231 billion, down 7%; operating income was $747 million, down 8%; net income was $656 million versus $654 million. Diluted EPS was $2.23 versus $2.20.

Cash flow, liquidity and debt

  • Six-month operating cash flow was $818 million, up from $694 million. Investing used $204 million, including $193 million of capital expenditures; financing used $531 million, including $230 million of share repurchases, $138 million of dividends and $180 million of term-loan repayments.
  • Cash and cash equivalents were $1.671 billion at April 30, 2024, versus $1.590 billion at October 31, 2023. Current assets were $4.203 billion and current liabilities $1.958 billion.
  • Debt totaled approximately $2.556 billion: $2.136 billion of senior notes and $420 million under the term loan, reclassified as short-term debt and due April 2025. The term loan’s weighted-average rate was 6.17%. Agilent reported compliance with credit-facility covenants and no outstanding borrowings under its revolving facilities or commercial paper program.
  • Management expects approximately $400 million of capital expenditures for FY2024, principally to expand nucleic-acid therapeutics manufacturing capacity in Colorado. It believes cash, operating cash generation and access to financing will meet liquidity needs for at least the next 12 months and beyond.

Changes, outlook and notable items

  • Revenue weakness reflected customer capital-spending pressure, particularly in pharmaceuticals and China. Revenue declined in all regions and end markets overall. CrossLab service demand provided a partial offset; repair and maintenance were strong while installations were weaker.
  • Management expects near-term macroeconomic challenges, especially in China, and continued customer capital-expenditure pressure. It remains optimistic about long-term market opportunities and plans to use targeted pricing and cost savings to address inflation.
  • The existing FY23 restructuring plan had incurred $50 million of costs since inception by the filing’s discussion; management expects approximately $80 million in annual cost reductions when complete, with remaining activities expected to be substantially completed by fiscal year-end.
  • After quarter-end, Agilent announced a further restructuring plan affecting approximately 500 employees, with estimated costs of $55 million and expected annual savings of approximately $100 million. Most activities are expected to be completed by fiscal year-end.
  • After quarter-end, the board approved a new $2.0 billion share-repurchase authorization, effective August 1, 2024, following the existing program. The board also declared a $0.236-per-share quarterly dividend payable July 24, 2024.
  • Unusual items included a $12 million tax expense related to settlement of a Singapore audit, an $8 million long-lived-asset impairment and a $6 million in-process R&D impairment during the six-month period. Agilent reported no pending legal matter it currently believes is reasonably possible to have a material impact.
  • Key risks include prolonged market weakness and uncertain customer order timing, China and other geopolitical or trade developments, foreign-exchange exposure, supply-chain and manufacturing constraints, regulatory and data-privacy obligations, cybersecurity, and the execution and savings assumptions of restructuring plans. Management reported disclosure controls were effective and no material change in internal control over financial reporting.

Important facts for investors to verify

  • Whether customer capital spending, particularly in China and pharmaceutical markets, stabilizes and supports a revenue recovery.
  • Whether CrossLab’s service growth continues to offset weaker instrument sales, and whether segment margins hold as revenue changes.
  • Progress against the FY23 and FY24 restructuring timelines, costs and projected annual savings.
  • Cash generation and capital-allocation demands, including approximately $400 million of expected FY2024 capital expenditures, debt due in 2025, repurchases and dividends.
  • Potential outcomes of tax audits and changes in unrecognized tax benefits; management says timing and amounts cannot be reliably estimated.
