Revenue growth was led by products (+10% in Q3) and Life Sciences and Applied Markets (+14%); Agilent CrossLab grew 5%. Diagnostics and Genomics revenue declined 2% in Q3, although it increased 9% for the nine-month period. Management attributed stronger operating margins mainly to higher sales volume; pricing and lower inventory charges helped offset higher materials, logistics, wage and amortization costs. Foreign exchange reduced reported revenue growth by 5 percentage points in Q3 and 3 points year to date.

Cash flow and liquidity: Operating cash flow was $864M for the nine months, down from $1.044B. Capital expenditures were $221M; management expected approximately $300M for FY2022. Cash and cash equivalents were $1.071B at July 31, down from $1.484B at October 31, 2021. Current assets were $3.690B and current liabilities $1.902B. Management said cash, operating cash generation, capital-market access and credit lines should meet liquidity needs for at least the next 12 months and beyond.

Debt: Short-term debt was $180M of commercial paper; long-term debt was $2.732B, for approximately $2.912B total debt. The company drew a $600M term loan, maturing in 2025, and used the proceeds to redeem $600M of 2023 senior notes, recording a $9M extinguishment loss. The revolving credit facility had no borrowings, and Agilent reported covenant compliance.

Material changes and notable items

  • Q3 revenue increased 8% year over year, while operating income rose 22%; year-to-date operating cash flow fell 17%, reflecting working-capital needs, including higher receivables and inventory, as well as COVID-related China disruption.
  • Shanghai lockdowns temporarily shut Agilent’s primary gas chromatography production facility and logistics center in Q2. More than half of delayed revenue was recognized in Q3; management expected the remainder in Q4 FY2022.
  • Year-to-date other income and expense included a $60M net loss on equity securities and the $9M debt-extinguishment loss. The equity-security loss was a material drag on reported results.
  • Agilent repurchased $1.004B of shares and paid $188M in dividends during the nine months. Approximately $573M remained under its $2.0B repurchase authorization.
  • Cash-flow pressure also reflected $233M used by receivables and $206M used by inventory. Days sales outstanding rose to 70 from 64 a year earlier; inventory days on hand rose to 117 from 100.

Outlook, risks and contingencies

Management expressed optimism about growth opportunities in all end markets for Q4 and the longer term, but did not provide a consolidated numerical revenue or earnings forecast in the supplied filing text. It expected the remaining Shanghai-delayed revenue to be recognized during Q4. Management also anticipated continued inflationary and logistical pressures, including long lead times and limited supply sources, and cited targeted pricing and sourcing strategies as mitigants.

Key risks include further pandemic-related shutdowns or delivery delays, supply constraints and inflation, foreign-exchange movements, uncertain customer spending and general economic conditions, and the possibility that demand or product development falls short of expectations. Agilent suspended sales prohibited by Russia-related sanctions, halted most shipments to Russia and ceased major Russian operations effective May 23, 2022; the associated shutdown expense was described as immaterial. Management reported no pending legal matters it believed reasonably likely to have a material impact. Disclosure controls were deemed effective, with no material change in internal control over financial reporting reported for the quarter.

Investor verification points

  • Verify whether the remaining Shanghai-delayed revenue was recognized in Q4 and whether the temporary production and logistics disruption had lasting effects.
  • Track conversion of earnings to cash, especially receivables, unbilled balances, inventory levels and supplier lead times.
  • Assess the recurring versus market-driven impact of equity-security gains and losses on earnings.
  • Monitor debt, interest costs and liquidity following the term-loan financing and commercial-paper borrowing.
  • Compare subsequent results with management’s qualitative growth outlook and stated inflation, pricing and supply-chain mitigations.
