Cost of revenues excluding depreciation and amortization was 65.4% of revenue versus 65.7% a year earlier; SG&A was 13.6% versus 14.0%. Interest expense rose to $166 from $141, primarily due to higher base rates on floating-rate debt and higher net debt. The effective tax rate declined to 14.4% from 19.6%, primarily due to the geographic mix of earnings.
Cash from operations less $145 of property, equipment and software purchases was approximately $377, compared with $253 in Q1 2023. Investing activities used $314, including $142 for acquisitions; financing activities used $106. Current assets were $5,651 and current liabilities $6,448. The company reported $1,895 of available capacity under its revolving credit facility; no additional revolving loan commitments were available under its receivables financing facility. Management believes cash, future operating cash flows and available credit will fund requirements and debt obligations for at least the next 12 months.
Material changes and segment results
- R&D: Revenue increased 3.4% to $2,095; segment profit rose 11.9% to $479. Growth reflected higher clinical-services volume and, to a lesser extent, lab testing. Contracted backlog increased to $30.1 billion from $29.7 billion at year-end; approximately $7.7 billion is expected to convert to revenue over the next 12 months.
- TAS: Revenue increased 0.6% to $1,453, while segment profit declined 7.2% to $335. Growth in information and technology services was partly offset by lower COVID-19-related work; data acquisition and processing costs increased.
- CSMS: Revenue increased 3.8% to $189 and segment profit was unchanged at $13.
- Consolidated revenue growth was approximately $105 on a constant-currency basis, with currency movements reducing reported growth. No individual customer represented 10% or more of revenue.
Net income was nearly flat despite higher operating income, as higher interest expense and other expense offset much of the improvement; lower tax expense provided a partial offset. Weighted average diluted shares declined to 184.3 million from 188.6 million, supporting higher diluted EPS. The company made no share repurchases under its program in Q1; $2,363 of authorization remained.
Outlook, risks and unusual items
- The filing provides no specific full-year revenue or earnings guidance. Remaining performance obligations were approximately $33.0 billion; IQVIA expects to recognize about 30% within 12 months and 85% within five years. This measure excludes certain wholly unperformed contracts that customers may cancel unilaterally.
- Restructuring actions to consolidate functions, eliminate redundant positions and align resources are expected to continue through 2024 and into 2025. Q1 restructuring expense was $15; the company expects most of the $34 accrued balance to be paid in 2024 and 2025.
- Several individually immaterial acquisitions were completed; purchase-price allocations remain preliminary. Acquisition-related cash outflow was $142.
- Key stated risks include short-notice contract termination or delays, backlog conversion, data access and privacy regulation, cybersecurity, foreign-exchange movements, client and industry conditions, and successful integration of acquisitions. Approximately 30% of Q1 revenue was denominated in currencies other than the U.S. dollar.
- IQVIA is defending litigation involving Veeva, including counterclaims seeking damages in excess of $200 million; trial is scheduled for early 2025. The company also describes Korean privacy-related proceedings and appeals. Management does not expect pending proceedings in aggregate to have a material adverse effect, but notes an unfavorable outcome could be material in the period resolved.
- The company reported compliance in all material respects with debt financial covenants and no material off-balance-sheet arrangements. It stated that there were no material changes to previously disclosed risk factors or market-risk disclosures.
Investor verification priorities
- Monitor R&D backlog conversion and whether clinical-services growth sustains segment-profit improvement.
- Assess the impact of elevated interest costs, floating-rate debt and scheduled maturities, including $3,211 due in 2026.
- Track cash conversion, acquisition spending, and unbilled services versus unearned income; these balances reflect differing revenue-recognition and billing milestones.
- Verify the pace and cash cost of restructuring through 2025, and whether TAS profitability recovers as costs and revenue trends evolve.
- Follow Veeva and Korean legal proceedings, data privacy and security developments, and foreign-exchange effects on reported results.
