Shell plc SHEL announced another divestment as part of its efforts to simplify the company’s portfolio under CEO Wael Sawan. The company will sell its entire stake in the Shell Nigeria Gas Group to Vaaris Energy, a privately owned Nigerian company. Shell Nigeria Gas Group operates a domestic gas distribution business that provides reliable natural gas supply to industrial customers in Nigeria. Its gas distribution and transmission network covers more than 138 kilometers.
Shell mentioned that it will retain its focus on deepwater oil production and its integrated gas business in Nigeria. The sale of the gas distribution business is consistent with Shell’s broader strategy of focusing on its higher-return businesses in oil and gas while scaling down renewable investments. The financial details of the deal have not yet been disclosed .
Recently, SHEL also expanded its presence in Canada’s offshore energy industry by joining Equinor’s Bay du Nord project. The company has secured a 30% non-operated interest in the project, reinforcing its position in the Canadian energy landscape, where it already has natural gas, LNG and downstream operations. Bay du Nord is planned as a phased subsea development linked to a floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) vessel. A final investment decision on the project is targeted for early 2027. This deal also aligns with Shell’s broader objective to build a portfolio focused on high-return oil and gas projects that can improve its profitability and enhance shareholder value.
